Chain of Custody Certification

Chain of Custody certification in simple terms places independently audited systems that track the forest product as it moves through the processing phases to give confidence to the consumer that the product they are buying has been procured from a certified forest.

For a product to be marketed as certified there must be an unbroken chain of certified organizations covering every change in legal ownership of the product from the certified forest up to the point where the product is finished or sold to retail.

Chain of Custody certification requires timber processors to demonstrate that their material control systems are adequate to track the forest product as it moves through the various processing phases. This gives confidence to the consumer that the materials in the product they are buying has been procured from a certified forest, and not mixed with other, non-certified material along the way.  Sawmillers and other downstream processors must have the capacity to implement and maintain such systems to the satisfaction of third-party auditors, and be willing to undergo scrutiny of their procedural, invoicing, and other doucmentation.
